OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The city of OMAHA, Neb., is in the midst of a Even though he didn’t get much done as Arkansas’ starter the night before, Zack Morris came through big time on Wednesday.

When Mississippi loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Morris was summoned to put down the threat and give the Razorbacks a 3-2 win in their College World Series matchup against Texas.

Second-placed West Virginia (46-20) and Ole Miss (39-23) will meet in the tournament’s best-of-three championship round on Saturday.

‘Morris did an incredible job,’ said Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn of his star wide receiver. At the conclusion of yesterday’s game, he told me, ‘I want the ball again.'” ‘Just be ready,’ I told them.

Then I asked, ‘Can you do this for me?’ when he came in.” ‘Yes, sir,’ he replied. That’s all I said: ‘Okay, here it is. You need to go get it.”

An offense that had racked up 64 runs in its first seven NCAA Tournament games was all but shut down for eight innings by Arkansas. Only one Ole Miss runner had made it past first base prior to Kemp Alderman’s game-tying homer in the second inning.

When closer Brady Tygart walked two consecutive batters, the Rebels loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth.

A one-run game was all but over when Ole Miss’ Justin Bench hit an infield single to bring Morris out of the game after he had allowed two runs in the first two-thirds of an inning. A lineout from Morris then ended the game.

Brady Slavens said, “Zack’s been clutch for us all year.” It was clear to everyone that he was trustworthy. We were all convinced that he was the right person for the job. I’m not sure he got off to the best possible start on Thursday night, but tonight, he came out and proved himself.”

Bianco said that he and his players would not dwell on the loss.

“How about looking at what a great opportunity we have for the future?” he asked.

Slavens blasted John Gaddis’ second pitch 436 feet to center field into a light breeze in the fifth inning as the game was tied at 1-1.

Pete Alonso of Florida and Dylan Busby of Florida State were the only other players to hit a home run to the right field wall since the CWS moved to Charles Schwab Field in 2011. (2017).

It was Slavens’ goal to find an over-the-top pitch, he said. That’s a good thing. Perhaps the most distant one I’ve ever gotten. “I don’t know.”

In the eighth inning, the Hogs tacked on a huge insurance run. After sending a ball down the left field line for a double, Cayden Wallace managed to get his hand on the bag just before second baseman Peyton Chatagnier attempted to tag him. On video review, the decision was upheld.

Once Wallace crossed the plate, the Hogs had a chance to extend their lead, but Jack Dougherty got out of the jam by striking out both Slavens and pinch-hitter Kendall Diggs to end the inning.

It was Arkansas freshman lefty Hagen Smith’s longest outing since he pitched six innings against the Rebels on April 30. A run on two hits and four walks was all he gave up, and he had eight strikeouts.

In order to give his team a chance, Smith said, “My mental approach today was to just throw the ball over the plate, just throw strikes, because I know I’ve got to throw strikes to give us a chance.” “I won’t be able to help our team if I walk people.”

Alderman’s leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth inning prompted Taylor to leave after allowing two hits and four strikeouts in three innings.

As he made his first start since April 9, Gaddis (3-2) allowed two runs on four hits in his first outing since June 6.

In the second inning, both teams hit home runs. For the third time in the CWS, Chris Lanzilli hit a long ball, and Alderman connected for a Rebels’ RBI.

After barely clearing the fence in left center, Lanzilli’s home run landed on its original spot on the field. After a video review, the homer was confirmed to be real.

Lanzilli became the first player since Michigan’s Jimmy Kerr in 2019 to hit three home runs in a CWS.

In a matchup between Dylan DeLucia (7-2) of Ole Miss and Connor Noland (11-5), Bianco and Van Horn have announced that they will begin their aces on Thursday (8-5).

“I can’t promise you the outcome of tomorrow’s game, but I can guarantee you we’re not scared, we’re not going to back down,” said Chatagnier, whose team was the last to receive an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament. “We’ve seen this before.”
