For those of us who are skin-care devotees, we may not know exactly what amino acids are or how they work. That’s perfectly fine. Skin care is a vast field, and it can be difficult to stay on top of all the latest developments, from ingredients to ever-evolving technology and regulations.
Amino acids are probably familiar to you from science class, and your teacher may have even referred to them as “building blocks,” but let’s go a step further. An amino acid is a chemical compound made up of oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, and other molecules essential to the body. They also happen to have a wide range of beauty advantages. In addition to helping your muscles grow and your immune system function, amino acids can also aid in the formation of proteins in your skin.

Many different types of amino acids can be found in nature. As a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon based in New York City, Dendy Engelman, MD, FACMS, tells POPSUGAR that some amino acids (nonessential) are created in the body, while others must be obtained from food sources (essential amino acids).

Using Amino Acids for Skin Care
Dr. Engelman says they’re “extremely versatile” when it comes to skin care because of their role in so many of your body’s functions. Do Amino Acids Have a Purpose?
While many “acids” in skin care require caution when first introduced, amino acids can simply be added to your current regimen. If the entire product is good for the skin of the person using it, “they work well with pretty much all skin types,” says Dr. Engelman. When it comes to sensitive skin, a more active/harsh product containing amino acids may still cause irritation, but gentler products containing amino acids are a better fit.” The most important thing here is to read the labels and learn your AHAs and BHAs.
Moisturizing creams, serums, eye creams, cleansers, and all the other types of skin-care products contain amino acids. If you have specific skin concerns or goals in mind, Dr. Engelman advises that you look for products that contain amino acids and address those needs. Dr. Engelman recommends that you look for “arginine, lysine, histidine, glycine, and leucine” in the ingredients list if the product doesn’t spell out “amino acids.” “Amino acids can be seen in these.”
