Prodrive P25: All-out, $563K Impreza restomod poised for Goodwood debut

You’re looking at the ultimate Subaru Impreza, barring the legendary WRC machines once driven by McRae and Burns. The fact that it’s being built by the same company, Prodrive, is also no accident.

The Impreza formula has been taken to its logical conclusion with the Prodrive P25, which will make its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend. In a nod to the 25th anniversary of the first two-door Impreza WRC, Prodrive has renamed its new car the 25th Anniversary WRC.

The 1997 Impreza WRC replaced Subaru’s Group A machines, which had won the WRC constructors’ titles in 1995 and 1996, as well as taking Colin McRae and Derek Ringer to WRC driver and co-driver titles in 1995..

The series’ homologation requirements were altered by WRC regulations that went into effect in 1997. Homologation specials were no longer required, but manufacturers still had to produce 2500 units of a particular body style.

These WRC machines from Skoda and Peugeot were able to participate because they didn’t have to be all-wheel drive road vehicles. This allowed for more manufacturers to participate, and it led to more extreme shapes on the stages.

This led to a common misunderstanding about the road car to which the new Prodrive P25 is most similar: the 1998 Subaru Impreza 22B. However, the 22B’s wide arches were not required for homologation; rather, they were a highly sought-after homage to the McRae’s weekend wheels that he favored.

The Prodrive P25 serves a similar purpose, albeit with a more serious tone than the 22B did.

The Impreza WRX, as originally sold in Japan, is the basis for this model. Modern interpretation begins to diverge from its predecessor with extensive use of carbon composites for the front and rear quarter panels, hood, trunklid and roof as well as carbon door cards and lightweight race seats in the cabin. As with the original Impreza WRC, Peter Stevens is involved in this one as well.

Instead of fiddling with mood lighting and DAB radio, the car’s functions let you alter useful things like throttle response, engine mapping, and anti-lag. Prodrive has installed a rally-style dash display and data logger. Dual handbrake functionality is also included, with an electric handbrake for parking and a fly-off lever for skidding in the WRC.

Even so, it’s been shaved down to a manageable length: If you don’t ask Prodrive to remove the rear seats and replace them with a cage, it’ll still seat four people, and the interior features a mix of leather, Alcantara, and carbon fiber trim.

The 22B had a lot less under the hood. Subaru’s 2.5-liter flat-four engine has been reengineered by Prodrive to include a new valvetrain with variable cam timing, new pistons, connecting rods, and piston rings.

Additionally, it features a Garrett motorsport turbocharger, an Akrapovi stainless-steel and titanium exhaust system, as well as a new intercooler and airbox. The end result? More than 400 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque, as well as a 0-to-62 mph time of 3.5 seconds.

There’s both good and bad news if you’re a fan of manual transmissions. The downside: It’s not a traditional H-pattern manual transmission. A steering column paddle allows for 80-millisecond shifts in a racing sequential with helical-cut gearing. In addition, there’s WRC-style launch control for those acceleration runs. Power is distributed to all four wheels via a set of limited-slip differentials in the front and rear, as well as an active center diff.

However, the Impreza has struts at each of its four corners, but the uprights are machined aluminum, and the track has grown to 1770 mm. The Bilstein dampers are also adjustable. For the most part, the car’s unsprung mass is comprised of two sets of discs, two sets of 8.5x19in wheels from Prodrive, and two sets of 235-section Bridgestone tires.

As a development mule, the car you see at Goodwood will undergo extensive testing after its public debut. Prices start at £460,000 ($563,000) and go up to £552,000 ($675 900), depending on the model. Customer deliveries begin later this year. There is no doubt that at this low a price, those 25 cars will find a new home—perhaps even alongside authentic WRC cars of the era…
